The
community-based hospice movement has brought dignity and humanity to
the dying process for patients and families. Born of the bitter experiences
of suffering, it has taken hold pretty quickly. Hospice elevates the
quality of a patient's waning days through a variety of measures that
emphasize physical, emotional and spiritual comfort. |
In
the United States alone, according to the Hospice Foundation of America,
more than 3,100 hospice programs care for more than a half million people
a year. And this is a community-based movement, often reliant on volunteers,
came to the U.S., in 1968, only
40 years ago! |
